June 18, 2025In this blog, the team at Dr Rakić Dental Clinic shares expert recommendations to help you recover quickly, without complications, and with maximum success.
1. Get Plenty of Rest on the First Day
After a surgical procedure, it’s natural for the body to need time to recover. On the first day after implant placement, rest as much as possible. Avoid physical exertion and don’t schedule any activities that require energy or concentration.
2. Use Cold Compresses to Reduce Swelling
Swelling is a normal reaction after implant surgery, especially during the first 2–3 days. We recommend applying cold compresses (ice in a towel or gel packs) for 15 minutes on the affected side, then taking a break before repeating the process.
3. Diet – What to Eat and What to Avoid
In the first few days after the procedure, eat only soft foods – porridge, yogurt, soups, mashed potatoes, cooked vegetables. Avoid the following:
- Hot foods and beverages
- Crunchy and hard foods
- Spicy and acidic foods
- Alcohol and carbonated drinks
It is also important not to chew on the side where the implant was placed, at least until the wound starts to heal.
4. Don’t Smoke
Smoking significantly slows healing and increases the risk of complications, including implant failure. If you are a smoker, try to refrain for at least the first two weeks – your health and the longevity of the implant depend on it.
5. Maintain Careful and Regular Oral Hygiene
Even though the wound is still healing, oral hygiene must be impeccable. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush, avoid brushing the surgical site during the first 24 hours, but continue brushing the other teeth regularly. You may use antiseptic mouthwashes (e.g., chlorhexidine), but avoid vigorous rinsing – the wound must remain stable. After the stitches are removed, you can use antiseptics as recommended by your dentist.
6. Regular Check-Ups Are Crucial to Success
After implant placement, follow-up appointments are essential. During these visits, we monitor how the wound is healing and whether the implant is properly integrating with the bone. At Dr Rakić Dental Clinic, check-ups are scheduled and tailored to each individual patient – and regular monitoring is one of the reasons behind our high success rate in implantology.
7. Pain and Medications
Mild pain is expected and usually subsides within 2–3 days. If you are prescribed medication – such as pain relievers or antibiotics – it’s very important to take them exactly as directed. Never take medication on your own without consulting your dentist.
Dental implants are an investment in your health, aesthetics, and quality of life. With proper care and adherence to professional advice, recovery will be smooth and problem-free.
At Dr Rakić Dental Clinic, we are committed to providing every patient with individual support before, during, and after the procedure.
