How often should you remove tartar? Importance of professional teeth cleaning
March 12, 2026Brushing your teeth is a daily habit that most people perform routinely, in the morning and in the evening, and sometimes after meals. Precisely because of this routine, small mistakes often occur that may seem harmless at first glance, but over time can lead to cavities, bleeding and inflamed gums, gum recession, tooth sensitivity, and bad breath.
The good news is that most of these mistakes can be easily corrected, without additional costs, with proper technique and a bit more attention.
1. Brushing Too Briefly
Many people brush their teeth for 30–45 seconds, which is not enough to remove plaque from all surfaces.
How to fix it:
The recommended brushing time is at least 2 minutes. The simplest method is to divide the mouth into four sections (upper left, upper right, lower left, lower right) and dedicate about 30 seconds to each.
2. Applying Too Much Pressure with the Toothbrush
Brushing harder does not mean cleaning better. On the contrary, it can lead to enamel damage and gum recession, which causes tooth sensitivity.
How to fix it:
Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and brush your teeth with gentle, controlled movements, without applying strong pressure. With electric toothbrushes, simply position the brush correctly and let the device do the work.
3. Incorrect Brushing Technique
Horizontal “scrubbing” often neglects the gumline area, where plaque most commonly accumulates, and can further irritate the gums.
How to fix it:
Hold the toothbrush at approximately a 45° angle toward the gums and use gentle circular or vibrating motions. Pay special attention to the inner surfaces of the teeth and the back molars.
4. Neglecting Tongue Cleaning
Bacteria accumulate on the surface of the tongue and can be a cause of bad breath.
How to fix it:
At the end of brushing, gently clean your tongue with a toothbrush or a tongue scraper, without applying strong pressure.
5. Infrequent Toothbrush Replacement
A worn toothbrush loses its effectiveness, and frayed bristles can irritate the gums.
How to fix it:
Replace your toothbrush every 2–3 months, or sooner if you notice damage. It is also recommended to replace it after a cold or viral infection.
6. Skipping Dental Floss or Interdental Brushes
A toothbrush cannot effectively clean the spaces between teeth, where cavities and gum inflammation often develop.
How to fix it:
Use dental floss once a day, preferably in the evening. For larger interdental spaces, interdental brushes may be more effective, and it is best to consult your dentist to choose the appropriate size.
7. Brushing Immediately After Meals
After consuming acidic foods and drinks, the enamel is temporarily more sensitive.
How to fix it:
Wait 20–30 minutes before brushing your teeth. In the meantime, you can rinse your mouth with water.
8. Choosing an Inappropriate Toothpaste
Different toothpastes serve different purposes: for sensitive teeth, gum protection, enamel strengthening, or whitening.
How to fix it:
Choose a toothpaste according to your specific needs. If you are unsure, consulting a dentist is the most reliable solution.
9. Skipping Regular Dental Checkups
Even with good oral hygiene, tartar cannot be removed at home, and early-stage cavities often develop without symptoms.
How to fix it:
Dental checkups and professional teeth cleaning are recommended 1–2 times per year, depending on individual needs.
Small Steps Make a Big Difference
Dental health does not depend only on habit, but on proper and consistent care. When basic principles are adopted—adequate brushing duration, proper technique, the use of additional tools, and regular checkups—the risk of cavities and gum disease is significantly reduced.
